# Word, Excel and PowerPoint to scanned PDFs: better layout

If you've opened an Office file in Look Scanned before, you may remember the experimental support warning. For Word `.docx`, Excel `.xlsx` and PowerPoint `.pptx` files, that warning is now gone: these formats have moved to stable support.

We've updated how documents are laid out and displayed, with improvements to fonts, charts and spreadsheet pagination. You can still go straight from an Office file to a scanned-looking PDF without exporting a PDF in another app first.

## Word and PowerPoint: more of the original comes through

A document opening successfully is only part of the job. Line breaks, page breaks and charts matter too.

Long Word documents now paginate even when the author hasn't inserted manual page breaks. For both Word and PowerPoint, we prefer fonts embedded in the file or already installed on your device. When a font is missing, we try a suitable web font or substitute. We've also improved Chinese font matching and regional fallbacks.

We've also added support for funnel charts, 3D charts and some TIFF images, helping reports and slide decks keep more of their original content.

## Excel: pages that read like a printout

A worksheet can stretch far beyond a sheet of paper. We've reworked how it turns into pages:

- A saved print area limits which cells are included.
- Wide worksheets use landscape pages.
- Supported heading rows or columns repeat across pages, using print titles or, when none are set, frozen panes.
- Hidden worksheets are skipped.

For a long list of expenses, repeating the headings makes page two much easier to read. If you only need part of a sheet, set the print area in Excel and save the file before opening it in Look Scanned.

## Make a scanned PDF from your Office file

1. Open [Look Scanned](https://lookscanned.io/en/scan) and select your file.
2. Check the preview, especially page breaks, fonts and tables.
3. Adjust the scan effect. Keep blur and noise low if clear text is the priority.
4. Choose PDF as the output format, generate the result and download it.

You can also export each page as an image. Our [guide to PDF, JPG and PNG](https://lookscanned.io/en/blog/scanned-document-pdf-jpg-png) explains the options and how the image ZIP downloads work.

In this standard scan flow, your source document is processed in the browser, not sent to a server for conversion. Missing fonts may be downloaded, but those font requests do not contain your document's text.

## A quick check before you send it

You may still see differences from Microsoft Office, especially with unusual fonts or intricate layouts. Check the preview. If exact positioning matters, export a PDF from the original app first, then add the scan effect in Look Scanned.

The older Word `.doc` and PowerPoint `.ppt` formats remain experimental.

If an Office file didn't look right last time, [try that same file again](https://lookscanned.io/en/scan) and take a look at the new preview.
